There are 3 species of elephant: African savanna or Bush elephant (Loxodonta africana), African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) and Asian elephant (Elephas maximus).
The African savanna elephant is the world’s largest land animal and an icon of biodiverse landscapes. We are privileged to have had elephants return and take up residency in Devil’s Gorge, the home of People For Wildlife in Zimbabwe.
Devil’s Gorge Conservancy has become an increasingly important haven for elephants, helping to preserve key pathways between protected wildlife areas within the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA TFCA), and maintaining ancient elephant migratory routes between wet season feeding grounds and dry season water sources. People For Wildlife is proud to be part of this important rewilding initiative.
On World Elephant Day we celebrate this species and pay tribute to the challenges faced by African conservationists striving towards a world where elephants and humans can live in harmony.
